Hello Doc!
We just had a successful NSI modern arnis seminar with Datu Kelly Worden
this weekend which actually started last Friday night. The guy is amazing! I
had only seen your dad in the training videos you gave me and by golly the
Datu moves just like a clone of your dad, demonstrating effortlessly from
one technique to another! And what's amazing was that he was talking, just
like your dad in the videos, i.e. explaining each phase of the technique
while demonstrating it in 'real time'! It was like I'm receiving training
from a bigger version of Doctor Matias again, which by the way put me back
in a nostalgic mood! The training was almost non-stop as he used the time
wisely by allowing us to "rest" between each practice session while he tells
jokes and stories of the good times he had with your dad before moving on to
the next lesson when he, I think, feels that the lactic acid in our bodies
is already dissipated. And when he talked it's almost like listening to an
excellent motivational speaker who was talking about his own older brother
that he adores.
I was not really paying much attention to what's going on while we were at
the House of Champions in California seminar a few years back because I was
in a "vacation mood" at that time so I didn't really saw much of what Datu
Kelly nor of the other master instructors presented during the very short
time they were alloted to teach because of time constraint which in my
opinion is not really conducive to learning. And besides my attitude at that
time was ... " I could alway refer to Doc Matias". But now our in-house
walking arnis encyclopedia is gone and probably is practicing arnis with
your dad 'Someplace'. So this time I paid attention.
The 1st American Datu was Gen. John J. Pershing who was awarded the title
Datu during the Philippine American War by no less than the Sultan of
Mindanao for the respect he earned from the fierce Filipino Muslim warriors.
And now we had the 2nd American Datu in Kelly Worden, a title he earned
not only from your dad, the Founder of Modern Arnis, but also from the
respect he earned from the Filipino eskrimadors!
I have to stop my chit-chat now to go for my arnis practice session with
Maryanne this morning. But we will be waiting for your coming here in June
for our awaited seminar. So until then Doc, please give my regards to the 3
ladies in your life ... your wife and two daughters!
And oh, by the way, Datu Kelly spoke highly of you and your siblings!
Take care,
Pol
