Worden Defense System...Because your Safety is not a sport

Hello, all Worden Defense System and Natural Spirit family, friends, and members!

Welcome to the March 2011 issue of our newsletter. Lots of good things happening, and as usual things are always exciting and busy!

The Gainesville Florida Bullet and Blade proved to be an excellent event with an extremely demanding yet enjoyable training regime. Administrative Director Edmund Tee kept things moving and on-schedule, while event hosts John and Susan Perkins covered all the bases with the highest level of professionalism.

As a special event bonus, the group was treated to an amazingly fun night at a 'Dueling Piano Bar' featuring great music, comedy, and camaraderie.

The hand-to-hand training program was held at the Gainesville Hampton Inn managed by Susan Perkins, and the firearms training program took place at a private training range personally constructed by John Perkins. According to everyone in attendance, Firearms Instructor Jeff Johnsgaard presented an exceptionally dynamic close-quarter training program that improved all attendees' skill sets beyond their own personal expectations! http://www.bulletandblade.com/Sneak_Peek.html

February 26th & 27th 2011 marked the return of JKD Iron Man Sigung Richard Bustillo. Sigung Bustillo performed and shared an immense array of martial art technical skill sets like few others can. Truly an encyclopedia of knowledge, the JKD Iron Man seamlessly blended the classical lines of Western boxing into the ruthless strategies of Muay Thai Kickboxing while carefully monitoring the progress of every participant in attendance. The IMB curriculum included the finer aspects of Doce Pares Eskrima-Kali, aspects of MMA, and a highly refined presentation of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do. Sigung Bustillo is not only a lifelong practitioner of martial arts; he is also dynamic teacher and mentor with the ability to guide his students to new levels of Jeet Kune Do proficiency.

On Saturday evening the group all had the pleasure of meeting and sharing dinner with another one of Bruce Lee's students and longtime confidant, 'Taky' Kimura. Taky is the senior patriarch of JKD, and possibly one of the most humble leaders within the Jeet Kune Do community; a true living legend!

Saturday afternoon I presented Sigung Bustillo with two Commemorative Special Forces Machetes for his continued dedication and contributions to martial arts worldwide.

Recently Jeet kune Do Legend Richard Bustillo traveled to Mumbai, India to share his energetic martial skills and in-depth knowledge with excited practitioners that literally treated him like royalty!

If you would like to learn more about Sigung Richard Bustillo, consider purchasing a new book "The Iron Dragon: Richard Bustillo" by David and Kevin Lumsden. I highly recommend this in-depth biography which covers such topics as A Dragon is Born, Allegiance, Honor, and Legacy; So You Think You Can Fight, and nine other action packed chapters.

Core Principles of the

Worden Defense System - Part 3

The Universal Pattern of Motion

by Dave Harrington

The Worden Defense System (WDS) has evolved regularly over the course of the past 30 years, but has always encompassed a core set of logical principles which make it a sound, tactically efficient, complete System. This article is the second of a series that addresses these principles and their applications.

The foundational principles of the Worden Defense System are:

Principle 1 - Tool Development

Principle 2 - The Ladder of Force Escalation

Principle 3 - The Universal Pattern of Motion

Principles 4 & 5 - Attachment & Adhesion

Principle 6 - Translation

Principles 7 & 8 - Transition & Flow

Principle 9 - Environmentalism

(Using your Environment)

Principle 10 - Connecting the Systems

The applications of the universal pattern of motion are myriad. The classical slashing lines with stick, machete or knife, staff forms, stick forms, and more are all applications of this. Kelly Worden reinforces this principle regularly at seminars to demonstrate that these patterns of motion are both complicated and simple.

WDS Instructor Big Ken Smith helped drive this home at a class last year. We were practicing shuffle steps - forward, back, left, right, replacement step. First we drilled in order (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), and then Ken started to randomize his call-outs. My first thought was 'seriously? We're back to basic steps?' After a bit of exploration, however, I found the wisdom that was buried in the lesson plan.

By focusing only on the feet (and where the body moves with the feet) this drill frees you up to focus on your perceptual speed, reaction speed, and physical speed. You can more easily perceive the lag in your response and work to reduce it. Then you feel the over- or undercorrections you might make, moving your center of mass too far, or moving your feet too far, and so on.

The implications of this are enormous, and can be applied to any of your drills to work toward the ultimate goals - AWARENESS, AGILITY, and FLOW.

I wish you good fortune!

-Dave
